Issa's Role In Our Housing Nightmare

Darrell Issa has done nothing to meaningfully address the housing crisis—in fact, his record shows he’s actively made it worse.

Let’s start with the basics: Issa is a multimillionaire who made much of his fortune in real estate as CEO of Greene Properties, Inc., and like many career politicians, he benefits from skyrocketing property values and policies that favor landlords and wealthy investors. He’s consistently voted against measures that would help renters, increase affordable housing, or regulate the predatory practices that drive up costs.

Issa has also been a reliable vote against tenant protections. He opposed federal relief for renters during the pandemic, even as millions faced eviction. He’s backed deregulation that makes it easier for developers and Wall Street investors to buy up housing stock, pricing everyday people out of the market. And when it comes to real solutions—like zoning reform, building more affordable housing, or curbing corporate ownership—he’s nowhere to be found.

Instead, Issa sticks to the same tired Republican talking points: deregulate, cut taxes (for the rich, of course), and somehow the “free market” will magically fix everything. But anyone paying rent or trying to buy a home in California knows that’s a fantasy. The market isn’t working for everyday people—it’s rigged for investors and landlords, and Issa is more than happy to keep it that way.

If Issa actually cared about solving the housing crisis, he’d be fighting for policies that make housing more accessible and affordable—not just more profitable for people like him. But at the end of the day, he’s not here to represent renters or struggling homebuyers. He’s here to protect the interests of the wealthy and the corporate donors who keep him in office.

And I’m here to take out the trash.

Darrell Issa must go.
